IYSF and Kellands School deliver their ACTIVE Sports Programme

IYSF set up ACTIVE to help children and young people in the Garioch Area equal to have equal access to local sports opportunities. ACTIVE provides children with access to community-based sports opportunities, which previously may have been challenging due to finances. IYSF provided funding for sports club fees and kits to enable students to partake in sporting activities.

Working with Kellands School, every P4-7 Child participated in two taster sessions of six sports offered within the local community during their school day, including Football, Judo, Rugby, Athletics, Tennis and Gymnastics.

The taster sessions provided the pupils with an introduction to the sport and try each sport.  Each of the sessions was delivered by sports coaches, and the pupils were enthusiastic about taking part and trying each of the sports.  Spending time with coaches from each sporting discipline was highly beneficial to the school, providing teachers with insight into coaching each sport included in the programme.

IYSF provided funding for the ACTIVE programme and based on the success of this initial programme, look forward to doing similar with other schools in the Garioch area.

Claire Macdonald, IYSF said: “We are certain that our new ACTIVE fund will go a long way in helping children to take part in community-based sports clubs, by helping to addressing the equality of access to local community sport opportunities by removing the financial barriers that may have previously restricted participation.”

‘We’re extremely grateful to the IYSF for the programme of activities our young people were able to engage with this year. The diverse range of sports including football, rugby, tennis, athletics, judo, and gymnastics, combined with a high quality of coaching meant the sessions were greatly received by both pupils and staff. Identifying need, establishing new skills, raising participation, and promoting engagement to name just a few of their impacts. The pupils enjoyed their sessions thoroughly which created a real ‘buzz’ around the school. Thank you to all at the IYSF for making this possible!’ said Graeme Mollsion, Head Teacher, Kellands School.
